After Death, Before Birthpokchanymph
06 Nowhere else to go
  • I couldn't believe how easy it was to find my client. I called this young man my client because he was the reason I got paid, his soul equaled my paycheck, as simple as that. I didn't have a passion for my job but I have a passion for money.
I walked inside the café, my client, (I would call him my client now since it sounded a bit weird when I called him my human, even if it was just inside my head,) subtly took a glance at me while he was checking the coffee machine. The guy didn't seem so old. I was surprised and not surprised at the same time. People died no matter how young they were.

“I’m sorry I can’t take your order yet. Technically the café is not opened yet and I still have some baking to do.” The guy pointed back at the kitchen. I just nodded. My brain tended not to function properly when I heard the word baking, especially human's baking. Down there we had great restaurants but not that good comparing to here. Waiting for this guy to die in one month should be fine and tasty.
“Can I sit here? Will it disturb you working?” I asked him even though my butt was already touching the stool, fingers drumming on the counter. I had no time for permission! I stood in a packed train, walked for 30 minutes to get here and stood here doing nothing but smoked for another 30 minutes, I was allowed, okay?
The guy just shrugged and went back to check the beans. I had nothing to do except watching him working but that would be creepy, even I knew that, so I just randomly picked some magazine and started reading them like I wanted to learn so bad about which mortal celebrity divorced with who.

I was too engrossed in some female singer's love story, she had broken up with her two-year lover then she dated someone new not so long after that but she was leaving him after being together for less than half a year. Man, human and love were the same, they had many complicated layers that you wouldn't know how many layers were hidden until it almost ended; Human's life could end in their first year of their beginning but it could also end 80 years later, love could end in 20 minutes in a toilet stall or end 50 years later in a living room. Well... I was to engrossed that I didn't know the guy was not at the counter anymore. 5 minutes later I saw him walked to some corner, turned on the music then he reappeared close to the counter again, humming.

"I'm going in the kitchen now. Call me if you need anything. Please wait for about twenty or thirty minutes and I'm going to take your order."
"Sure, no need to hurry. I have nowhere else to go anyway."
