After Death, Before Birthpokchanymph
04 Death had no holidays

  • I loved travelling by train because of the gentle breeze passing through the window made my heart felt at home. I could do this for the rest of my life...
    Nah, just kidding.
I hated riding train so much, maybe more than I hated my job (and I hated it A LOT). I meant... look at how it was just a moving box going from point A to point B and then back to point A again. What was the point? I rather stayed at point B forever.

The reason why I talked about train wasn’t because of the need to remind myself how much I hated riding train but it was because I was taking the train to the human world, to fix my silly problem but I had to deal with the current problem first, which was tons of people (and monsters) waiting for the train at the station.

“Hey! Watch where you’re going!” A lady holding hand with her son scolded me when I accidentally bumped her. They knew I was Death the moment I stared coldly at them. It was not my fault, the train was so packed I couldn’t move freely. The woman pulled her son’s hand to get away from me. Everyone was afraid of death even when they were in hell. Everyone.

The boy watched me as they were walking away. Even though there were Death everywhere I thought it might still be uncanny seeing them in the place where you least expected.
The kid was using some kind of white blanket to cover his body from head to toe. The blanket was spotted with fake sluggish ooze and blood and that was when it clicked me. That disgusting blanket was a Halloween costume! It was the beginning of October.

It was October. It was time for everyone to take a break from their job or school and have a vacation in the human world until October 31st. Grim Reaper didn’t have holidays which wasn’t really surprising since there were dead people every day, every hour, every minute and every second. Death had no holidays and neither did I.
That was the reason why I had to wait a long time before there was a space for me to get on the train. Seriously, I could use a shrinking spell right then, it would make everything easier. Good thing Big Foot stayed up there or otherwise I would be stepped by their…guess what? Big foot.

The train reached many stations before it reached Grand Central. Ah, America, the same air I breathed hundreds years ago plus pollution. Why couldn’t my human be in Nepal or Switzerland? I preferred the air there even though I didn’t need it as much as the humankind. Normally I had Asia shift. It meant I dealt with dead people in Asia, not in other continents. I didn’t know why this name and this place happened to be in my book. Was it the watcher doing or was it my book doing?

Why did I have to be here? Why did it have to be that person?

Why did it have to be you?
