After Death, Before Birthpokchanymph
22 Room 28
  • Have you met the guy yet?

I got a text from Rahul. I didn't expect him to text me, really. I didn't even give my number to him. It must be Kat who gave my number to him because she was the only one who knew my number. I found it a bit unsettling because I wouldn't know what Rahul would told her if these two talked.
    Yes.
I texted back. Rahul immediately asked me again. It was like he stared at his phone and wait ed for my answer. Did that guy have no job? He only had one job which was writing list of names to the books and look how it turned out (I know, I know, it was my fault but just let me take it on him, okay?).
Then what? What's his name? Have u send the name to Kat yet?
Yes, geez dude. I've already done that.
    And?
Kat said she was pretty sure this guy was it.
    He's it?
    Yup.
    Great.
Then Rahul stopped texting me which I was really glad. I didn't like phones. Let me tell you again, I was not an old-fashioned person but I just...didn't see the need to communicate with anyone before. I got by fine when I lived with Kat, no need to have phones.

I texted Luke to make sure I got the right number then I was so bored that I opened web browser and read some weird how-to on Wikihow, like How to be Human. The person who wrote this article must be something else that was not human...I mean why would you want to be a human if you were one?

My one advice to human who reads these articles and wants to know how to be a human: live.

I finished drinking the coffee Luke made but I still sat at the café for a while until that Marco guy was looking at me like he expected me to order something. I ordered one of the pastry in a showcase. He looked at me again while I was eating (devouring) the pastry.
    "Luke baked that one."
"I know. You don't look like you could bake." I said, flipping my hair to my back because it was a mess eating like this.
Marco raised his eyebrows, "I could." I just shrugged. It was not important of this person could bake or not. He was just a nerdy barista you could meet in every café or maybe I was biased because he was not the human I wanted.

"You know Luke's type, right?" Marco said again when I was finishing my pastry. I looked around, he must have nothing to do that he tried to talk to me all the time.
"Ugh, no, and I have no interest in that."
"But I thought you were trying to hit on him...with all you borrowing his books and stuff."
I rolled my eyes so hard I thought it would disappear right inside my brain because I had no clue how bodies worked. Human and their feelings strikes again.
"No, I was not." i replied curtly, grabbing my stuffs and leaving the guy behind the counter with other customers in the café.

Human was such a troublesome creatures, I mean...they always use feelings to indicate what they could do or not. Sometimes I did that too because I thought some parts of me still thought that I was a human, not an immortal nor a grim reaper...but I would never completely understand how feelings worked. I joked and laughed, I cared about my roommate and that was it.
Did I understand why I helped Kat became a grim reaper instead of going to another place? I did. It was because I have feelings but I was pretty sure that feelings was not love, not pleasure. I'd never wanted to hit on anyone.
What the fuck is love anyway.

I stood among the crowd, thinking where I should go. Since I had phone to talk with Kat now I planned not to go home for a while to make sure that this guy was it. Normally we did come home but sometimes if the job had some slightly problem we stayed for a while in the Upperworld.

You already knew that we, Underworld creatures went to up here a lot especially in October, so where did we go? Of course, some still liked to do the cliche stuff like haunted houses but some prefer other choices, like me.
    I went to the apartment.

The apartment had no name but every creature knew of it. From outside, it was just a old red-brick building on the street human saw but no one cared. It was not human proof so we had human guests here and there but still, the majority of the tenants were not fully human.

I already phoned the landlord that I was going to stay here for a month. He was an old acquaintance of mine but we didn't talk much anymore since the old day has passed and he stopped his old job and became a landlord in NYC instead.
"Hey, Em. Long time no see." Jack, the landlord welcomed me with his thick british accent when I entered the building. He was a middle-aged guy but still wore trendy clothes, dying his hair black because he had a reputation of a 'black dog' he had to keep.
    "Hey, where's my room?"
"Here. I'll take you there. You're lucky some banshee just left last week so you got a second floor." Jack gave me an old key and walked ahead of me. I followed him until we reached the wooden door.
    "Here it is, room 28."

I looked at the faded number on the door and looked around. My room was at the end of the floor, the room next to mine, room 27 was opening quickly.
"Thanks dude, I'm gonna go now."
I heard some familiar voice getting out of the room so I just stopped, trying to peek who was inside. Jack who was standing behind me also peeked curiously.

    It was Luke.
