Music is an art that connects people together even it come from different language and culture but with music, we are connected. There are many genres of music that people listen to nowadays. For example, Rock, Pop, Jazz, Blue, Ballad and so on. There is one genre that might not know well as much as other genre but this genre had interested by a lot of people as well. It is called Indie music which comes from the word “independent”. At first, indie music is the concept of band or artist who produces their music by them self or small music label. As time pass by, from the small music cycle, indie music becomes a bigger cycle around the world in Thailand as well.
In Thailand, when we think about indie music there is one channel that people will think about. It is Cat Radio an online radio station that makes indie music popular in Thailand. At first, Cat Radio was from Fat Radio station a station that does not broadcast mainstream music. However, alternative music did not make high rating as much as mainstream music so they thought about creating a concert, music festival or events. Which is called “Fat Festival” the festival that wants to tell people that this world is full of variety that we may not know yet? The concept of Fat Festival is to make a group of listeners can meet each other, get to meet their favorite artists also can buy merchandise from them.
From these ideas, Fat Festival become very successfully. After 12 years of Fat Festival, “Jong” a producer of Fat Radio feel that the perspective that people thought of Fat Festival were different from his purpose and as time goes by radio station did not make a profit anymore so he decided to close down Fat Festival and Fat Radio. Then, 2 years later in 2014, he starts to make a new radio online station with a new music festival called “Cat Radio” and “Cat Expo”.
Cat Radio came with the same purpose that he wants to continue his work as he works at Fat Radio. As you all know now that traditional of Fat Radio is Fat Festival or other music events so it is impossible that Cat Radio will not provide any music events. Cat Radio provides a lot of different events not just about music event but also provide different inspirational events too. However, There are 3 main music events that Cat Radio provide every year which are Cat Foodival, Cat T-Shirt and the last one is the biggest festival for people who love to listen to alternative music. The slogan of Cat Expo is “A festival for regular people” which mean people who share the same interest. The festival happens on 2 days of every November. In 2018, it is 5th of Cat Expo, with 25,000 attendees and 124 artists with the same purpose as Fat Festival, Cat Expo will have an area for attendees to getting close with artists by buy artists’ merchandise from their favorite artists’ hands.
For this year, 6th Cat Expo will happen on 23 - 24 November at Siam Park City, Ramindra. If you guys wanna try different vibes of music events or concerts, you should try one of Cat music events for once!
