ตอนนี้มีการพูดถึง เรื่องต่างชาติมองคนไทยถูก "brainwashed" หรือ ถูกล้างสมอง กัน ผมเลยนึกถึงการพูดคุยกับเพื่อนฝรั่งเมื่อหลายปีมาแล้วระหว่างมื้อเย็น การพูดคุยวกมาที่สถาบันพระมหากษัตริย์ เขาถามอย่างสุภาพ เหมือนอย่างที่คนตะวันตกคิด ว่า คนไทยนับถือพระมหากษัตริย์ขนาดนี้ เป็นเพราะการ PR ที่ดีเลิศ และการปิดกั้นโดยกฏหมายไม่ให้วิจารณ์ทางลบหรือเปล่า

ผมอดยิ้มไม่ได้ เราสนิทกันพอที่เขารู้ว่า คำถามแบบนี้ผมคงไม่อึดอัดทีจะตอบเขา

ผมบอกว่า เรื่องการ PR นั้นย่อมมีแน่ และเป็นการประชาสัมพันธ์ที่ดีเยี่ยมครอบคลุมสื่อทุกรูปแบบด้วย บางคนบอกว่าเป็น propaganda ด้วยซ้ำไป

แต่ผมตั้งข้อสังเกตให้เขาว่า สิ่งใดๆในโลกนี้ก็ตาม ต่อให้ได้โฆษณาประชาสัมพันธ์ชั้นยอด ภาพพจน์สวยงาม แต่ถ้าไม่ดีจริง อย่างมากก็ทำให้คนแห่กันเคลิ้มไปสักพัก ไม่นานก็รู้ความจริง ไม่มีทางรอด ของไม่ดีจริง โฆษณาก็ช่วยไม่ได้

แต่ถ้าหาก ไม่ใช่คนไม่กี่คน แต่เป็นคนจำนวนหลายสิบล้าน ยังมีความนิยมต่อเนื่องในเรื่องหนึ่ง เป็นเวลานานถึง 70 ปีได้ คงไม่ใช่เพราะโฆษณาประชาสัมพันธ์แน่

โดยเฉพาะคนเหล่านั้นไม่ใช่คนโง่ พวกเขาผ่านมาหลายสมัย ตั้งแต่ยุคที่เป็นประเทศยากจนด้อยพัฒนา สร้างตัวจนมาถึงประเทศระดับ upper-middle income country ภายในไม่กี่สิบปี ย่อมอธิบายอะไรได้อยู่

เพื่อนฝรั่งผมพยักหน้า เขานิ่งคิดไปแวบหนึ่ง และเอ่ยต่อแบบไม่เต็มเสียง แบบค่อนข้างเกรงใจ

“แล้วเรื่องกฎหมายล่ะ คนไทยพูดได้แต่ทางบวกนี่”

“นั่นคือกฏหมาย ที่บังคับใช้ได้ในที่สว่าง” ผมตอบด้วยน้ำเสียงสบายๆ ไม่อยากให้เขาต้องเกร็ง “แต่คุณอยู่เมืองไทยสักพักมาแล้ว พอสนิทกับคนไทยมากๆ คุณก็คงรู้ว่า ไม่ได้หมายความว่า พวกเขาจะไม่รู้ว่าอะไรเป็นอะไร”

เขาหัวเราะชอบใจ “เออจริงสินะ ใช่ๆ”

ผมฉวยโอกาสพูดต่อระหว่างเขายกเบียร์ขึ้นดื่ม “คนไทยไม่ได้นับถือในหลวงเพียงเพราะเป็น king แต่เรานับถือเพราะในหลวงเป็น very good king และที่สำคัญ เราไม่ได้มองท่านว่าเป็นสมมติเทพเหมือนคนสมัยโบราณ คนไทยมองว่า ท่านคือ father figure ต่างหาก และนั่นเกิด emotional connection ที่มีพลังมาก”

“คนตะวันตกชอบคิดว่า คนไทยงมงายมองเห็น king เป็นเทพเจ้า นั่นมันวิธีมองแบบฮอลลีวู้ด มันดูโรแมนติกดีที่ต่างชาติมองประเทศตะวันออกในอารมณ์นั้น แต่นี่มันโลกจริง คนสมัยใหม่เป็นหลายสิบล้านที่ไหนจะพร้อมกันเชื่ออย่างนั้นได้”

“ขึ้นชื่อว่า king ไม่ได้หมายความว่า คนไทยจะ set default นับถือโดยไม่มีเงื่อนไข ดูจากประวัติศาสตร์ไทย ก็ยังมีพระมหากษัตริย์หลายพระองค์ที่ถูกตำหนิเสียๆหายๆ จากประวัติศาสตร์ ในพงศาวดาร* ยังมีการประนามว่ากษัตริย์บางพระองค์ เป็นคนบาป ไร้ศีลธรรม อ่อนแอ สารพัดจะว่าแรงและด่าตรง ในหนังสือเรียนก็ยังมีพูดถึง”

เพื่อนผมพูดแทรกขึ้นมาทันที “งั้นผมว่า พวกคุณนี่ก็โหด (so cruel) ไม่เบานะ”

“หา.. ทำไมงั้นล่ะ”

เพื่อนฝรั่งผมตอบอย่างจริงจัง ว่า “พระมหากษัตริย์ไทยคงเป็น king ที่เป็นยากที่สุดในโลก เพราะคนไทยคาดหมายว่า ต้องทำงานมากมายให้ได้ผลงานที่จับต้องได้ ต่างจาก king ที่อื่นๆ ที่เพียงแต่ทำตัวให้น่านับถือก็พอแล้ว ผมว่า ว่าไปแล้ว พวกคุณคนไทยนี่ demanding กับ king ที่เดียวละ”

เขาหยิบแก้วเบียร์จะดื่มต่อ แล้วถือค้างไว้ หันมาพูดว่า

"Or in the other words :so demanding to your father"

An Open Conversation with A Westerner : Brainwashed or What?

Presently, there are talks about Thai people are brainwashed to love their king. This reminds me of the conversation I had with my ‘farang’ (westerner) friend years ago over a dinner.

After chitchatting for awhile, the talk turned to the subject of Thai monarchy. My friend expressed his doubt politely, with a typical western view, that Thais highly adored their king just because of good public relation and the law prohibiting criticizing the monarchy rather than any other reasons.

I could not hide my smile. We knew each other well. So he knew I won’t get embarrassed by his inquisitive.

I told him that of course, in this case, the public relation was obvious and it was an excellent one covering all media channels. Some even said it was in fact a propaganda.

But I gave him a thought. : For any case in the world, a great PR could make people get fantasized and carried away for awhile. But once people find out that the truth is contradict to the thing advertised, then it is finished. The plain truth is eventually a defective products cannot be rescued by a good PR, no matter what.

“But if, not just few, but the mass of of millions and millions people are having been holding up the respect of someone continuously for the long period of 70 years, then it is too easy to say it is because of good PR machine.”

“More importantly, those people are not stupid. They built themselves up the economic ladder and gone through periods of changes, from the era of poverty-prone country to upper-middle income country within few decades. And that really tells something.”

My westerner friend nodded. He paused for thinking and then started speaking with unusually cautious voice.

“How about the law? Thai people can only say positive things about the monarchy.”

“That is the law, which can be only applied in daylight”. I answered with relaxing tone intending to show I am not offended by his question. “ But as you may already know, once you are closely acquainted to any Thais, you can see that in fact they know surprisingly a whole lot about the subject.”

He burst out laughing. “Oh yes! that’s right!.”

I grabbed my turn to speak when he paused for drinking his beer.

“Thais do not hold the king in high regards simply because he is a king. We do because he is very very good king. And we do not see him as a demigod according the ancient tradition anymore. The simple truth is Thai people see him as a father figure. And that creates extremely powerful emotional connection between Thai people and Thai king unlike any other."

"Westerners like to view Thai people as a bunch of backwards holding their king as a human god. I would say that is rather Hollywood’s perspective. It has a romantic flavor in hearing that one oriental kingdom still practices fairly-tale like faith. But for real, how could it possibly be that today’s human in millions uniformly surmise to such belief?"

"Being a king does not command unconditional respect from the Thais by default. Taking from the history, there are a numbers of Thai kings being criticized unrespectfully, severely and openly in the written records. In Thai history chronicles*, there are kings directly being condemned for being sinful, unethical, weak, or all of the bad things imagined. Even modern student’s history text books also cover these."

My friend interrupted “Therefore, I think you guys are so cruel.”

“Oh.. why’s that?”

My farang friends replied in earnest tone “The king of Thailand is perhaps the world’s most difficult kingship. Thai people expect their king to deliver tangible results out of enormous works the king is expected to do. This is different from other kings, who can comfortably be in the position by just being respectable. You know what, you Thais are so demanding to your king."

My friend reached for the glass of beer. Then he paused and turned to me.

“Or in the other words, you are so demanding to your father.”
