Basic Space Coffee: A basic story of life
  • It was a Saturday morning, 10 o'clock, in Ayutthaya; the old capital of Thailand back around 250 years ago. I took the Tuk-Tuk car to one of my fav places in this city; the Basic Space coffee shop.

Arrived at that place, I ordered 2 cups of coffee; the Heavyweight latte, which is a signature coffee of the shop. What was different from other times was that I had reserved the carrot cake and banana bread for my breakfast.

Everything seemed simple and ordinary, like a normal day of life in which people just have coffee and cake in the morning and then do other things else for rest of the day, but, because it is a normal thing of life, it is also, perhaps, hard for someone to carry on.

I had known last night before going to this coffee shop that one of the staff just passed her tough, mournful day. And this was also the reason why the shop was closed for many days.

I believed it was not easy for her to get through this situation while still having her duty at the shop. For me as a customer, it is ok to close the shop for more days if the staff is in a difficult time like this. But the woman I mentioned about, she worked perfectly, talked to customers, and welcomed everyone with kindness as she always does. (Moreover, her desserts were great as the same, and I knew that she made them herself.) Same as other staff in the cafe, they served great coffee, kind service, and good mood for clients liked it was an ordinary, basic day although it was not that simple day.

These things are just stories in the life of someone else, but it made me sad, sympathy and more love this place. Once your life is really tough and hard to carry on, but it does not mean that you cannot step up again from the bad day. I really admire this woman that she does not sink into tears nor forget the past, but she understands to live with it and moves forward to the future. She is responsible for herself, family, friends, and also customers even though some of them may know nothing about what just has happened in her life.

Living a life seems a basic thing, but managing this basic thing is not that basic.
