Studying several remote and ensconced ethnic groups in various parts of the globe where contact to modern civilizations are virtually non-existent, anthropologists have come to appreciation of various distinct sets of social behaviors that shed light to the development and evolution of primitive human interaction from the basis of equality to non-equality which the latter has, hitherto, become dominate in almost all societies.
Suffice it to say that our ancestors started living in extended families where members of the group were related to one another by blood (fathers, mothers, in-laws, daughters, and sons; males in this group can have few wifes, likewise females can share her husbands with her friends). In these groups, males engaged in high-risk and low-productive activites namely hunting and killing big animals whereas females engaged in low-risk and high-productive activites namely foraging and gathering fruits, tubes, or vegetables. One would think that our ancestors lived in harmony like a term that coined recently "sufficient economy", it was by no mean close to harmony, however. Because their sustenance depended heavily on unpredictable factors such as flooded, drought, animal migration, epidemics, etc., thus the help between groups of extended family occurred. This typically referred to "gift-giving" whereby one group gave their surplus to another and expected to be reciprocated, should one have a bad year.
Once the extended families extended to become clans (clan: a set of multiple groups of individuals who live among each other with common beliefs that they are tied by either heredity or common ancestors, the latter could refer to imaginable figures such as gods or divine beings), chaos ensured. Rules and ordered were therefore implemented in order to "de-chaos". The way of passing on knowledges of hunting or food gathering that once simply performed by fathers or mothers to their sons or daughters became more complicated. With these new concept of living, the youths in clans typically lived together, they had to be "initiated" when they reached the ages at which they can live productively to the clans, and once that occurred, they shall be said to become part of their clans.
Given there were no any writing systems existed at that time, our ancestors had come up with the way to teach their offsprings by imitating and demonstrating their way of living in elaborate means or in other word by ritualistic approches. Before the initiation process started, all the youths must accept THE ULTMATE TRUTH which was the truth told by their seniors. This truth was supreme and cannot be challenged even there was no evidence to either accept or repudiate that truth. Then, they would attend a RITUAL which was a symbolistic mean of reaching adulthood. Ritual can be variably performed such as dancing, tattooing on their skin, piercing their ears or mouths, extracting their teeth, being beaten by their old counterparts, or whatever the older members of their communities saw fit. After attending a ritual, those youth would find an AWE INSPIRING EXPERIENCE which ultimately changed their outlooks and thus becoming full adults who can perform tasks that only adult members of the clans can do. Those who did not participate or failed the initiation process would be considered weaks and treated as pariahs or outsiders.
Do you familiar with this initiation process? I feel pity for those anthropologists who risked their lifes studying those ethnic groups in remote, harsh, and enscornced environments (tropical Sub-Saharan and Highland Africa, Siberia, Peri-North Pole, and tropical rain forests in unnamed islands in the Andaman See), they could have just come to Thailand and study initiation process here (although it is masqueraded as SOTUS). We typically have initiation processes in various part of our country during the summer season around mid-August to mid-September every year. I am so delighted to know that our country can be a large study field for development of primitive society.
