LaLiga's reaction to the tragedy in Indonesia: a minute of silence in today's matches in the first and second divisions
LaLiga and the RFEF have agreed to honor those who died in the soccer match riots in Indonesia in every match of Round 7 of LaLiga Santander and Match 8 of LaLiga Smartbank
LaLiga and the RFEF announced in a statement that in the lead-up to matches on the 7th and 8th matches of LaLiga Santander and LaLiga Smartbank, respectively, a minute of silence will be observed in honor of those who died in the violent events that occurred. Last night at Kanjuruhan Stadium on the Indonesian island of Java, at least 174 people were killed after some fans stormed the pitch and formed a stampede at the end of the Arima 2-3 Persibaya Surabaya match.
Arima fans, angry at their team's defeat against those coached by Luis Milla, invaded the pitch as soon as the match was over. Players and judges tried to escape to the changing rooms when the terrible battle had already begun.
The Spanish coach's club itself called for peace and rejected violence, with a tweet calling for "humanity above all".
Facing an event practically unprecedented in the history of football, there were already numerous reactions from the entities and personalities of the football team denouncing what happened in the Asian country. In the statement issued by LaLiga and the RFEF, both organizations wanted to express their solidarity with the families of the victims, and seize the opportunity to wish a speedy recovery to those injured in the riots.
Clubs stand in solidarity
Many LaLiga Santander teams and players also showed their solidarity with the victims. Some teams expressed their condolences for what happened on social media, and Real Madrid observed a minute of silence at the beginning of its regular and extraordinary assembly.
In the moments leading up to the start of the General Assembly that Real Madrid is holding today, the Meiring Club and its members observed a minute of silence in respect of the victims. "More than a hundred people lost their lives. Our condolences to all their loved ones," said President Florentino Pérez.
