How to build an effective argument
  • INTRODUCTION

To defend an idea, it is necessary to find arguments and to know how to present them clearly so as to convince. Here's how to do it.

    A. I distinguish the thesis, the arguments and the examples

    • To build an effective argument, I must know how to express three elements:

      • The thesis: This is the idea I want to defend, the answer to the question asked.
Example : Freedom of expression is a fundamental right.

      • The arguments: These are the reasons that support the thesis, the evidence that I put forward.
Example : 1. Freedom of expression dates from 1789 (it is defined in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen). 2. It allows a democracy to exist ...

      • The examples: These are the precise illustrations which give weight to the arguments.
Example : In France, I can express my disagreement by voting but also by publishing a critical article or a satirical drawing ... I thus express my opinion freely as long as it does not offend others.

  • B. Researching and sorting out draft ideas

    • I clearly state the thesis to defend , I do not hesitate to reformulate it in several ways. I ask myself questions to identify its limits.

    • I'm looking for convincing arguments . I express them in writing and do not hesitate to cross out the weakest or those that I fail to illustrate with examples and write my speech.

    • I'm looking for examples to illustrate each argument. They must be precise (space-time framework, portraits of characters, quotes from a text, references taken from the real world ...).write my essay for me

    C. The structure

    • I start with a short introduction (containing a reminder of the situation, a reminder of the subject, the thesis and the announcement of the plan).

    • I end with a concluding sentence (which briefly takes up the argument).

    • Each argument must have a new paragraph .

    • Each argument must be accompanied by a specific example .

    D. The words used to articulate the argument

    • To correctly articulate an argument, you must use logical connectors . Each paragraph begins with a connector. They must be chosen wisely, according to the role they play in the text. Here are some words that can help me:

      • To introduce the first argument : First - First - First ...

      • To add an argument : Then - Then - In addition - In addition - Secondly ...

      • To add an argument contrary to the previous one: However - Nevertheless - Yet - On the other hand ...

      • To introduce an example : So - Indeed - For example ...

      • To conclude the text : To conclude - In short - Finally ...
